At 5 For Fighting, we’re a small grassroots hockey media company, and we believe your personal information should be treated with the same respect we’d expect for our own.
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and when it may be shared. It applies to 5forfighting.ca, our podcast, our newsletter, and our online store (together, the “Services”).
Who We Are
5 For Fighting (“we”, “us”, “our”) is operated by Ryan Pittman, based in Alberta, Canada. Our privacy contact is Ryan Pittman, reachable at five.for.fighting.podcast@gmail.com.
Your Consent
By using our Services, placing an order, or subscribing to our newsletter, you agree to the collection, use, and disclosure of your information as described in this policy. You can withdraw your consent at any time, subject to legal and contractual restrictions, by contacting us. Withdrawing consent may mean we can no longer provide some services, such as fulfilling an order.
What Information We Collect
Information you give us. This may include your name, email address, shipping and billing address, phone number, order details, account details if you create an account, and anything you include when you contact us or subscribe to our newsletter.
Payment information. Payments are processed by woo commerce. We do not intend to store your full payment card details ourselves.
Information collected automatically. When you visit our site, we and our service providers may collect technical information such as your IP address, approximate location, device and browser type, the pages you view, the site that referred you, and the date and time of your visit. Some of this is collected using cookies (see below).
Information from service providers. For example, our fulfillment provider may give us shipping and delivery updates for your order, and our analytics tools give us reports about how the site is used.
We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information.
How We Use Your Information
We use personal information for reasonable purposes connected to running 5 For Fighting, including to:
- process and fulfill merchandise orders, and provide shipping information to our fulfillment partners;
- respond to questions, inquiries, and customer-service requests;
- send our newsletter when you have given the required consent;
- communicate with you about an order or service you requested;
- operate, secure, and improve our website and Services, including understanding how visitors use them;
- measure the performance of advertising and affiliate links; and
- meet legal, regulatory, accounting, and tax obligations.
We do not use your personal information for unrelated purposes.
Cookies and Similar Technologies
Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use:
- Essential cookies that make the site work, such as your shopping cart, checkout, and login.
- Analytics cookies that help us understand how visitors use the site (see Analytics below).
- Advertising and affiliate cookies, which may be set by ad providers or by retailers we link to (see Advertising and Affiliate Links below).
- Cookies from embedded content, such as videos, podcast players, or social media features.
You can control cookies through your browser settings and delete existing cookies at any time. Blocking some cookies may affect how the site works. You can also opt out of Google Analytics using Google’s browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout, and manage personalized ads at adssettings.google.com or youradchoices.ca.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics and Google Search Console, connected through Google’s Site Kit plugin, to understand which pages are popular, where visitors come from, and how people find us in search. Google may collect information such as your IP address and cookie identifiers to provide these services, subject to Google’s own privacy policy.
Advertising and Affiliate Links
We may display advertising, including ads provided by Google AdSense or similar services, and we may include affiliate links to retailers and ticket sellers, such as Amazon and hockey equipment stores.
Third-party advertising providers, including Google, may use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. When you click an affiliate link, the retailer may set a cookie so it can credit us for the referral, and we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We do not receive your personal purchase details from these retailers, only limited reporting about commissions. See our Affiliate Disclosure for more.
Merchandise Orders and Printful
Our merchandise is produced and fulfilled through Printful, a third-party print-on-demand provider. When you buy merchandise, we give Printful and other necessary providers the information required to manufacture and deliver your order, such as your name, shipping address, contact information, and order details. We only provide information that is reasonably necessary. Printful’s handling of personal information is also governed by its own privacy policy and applicable laws.
Newsletter and Email Communications
If you subscribe to our newsletter, we use your email address to send the communications you asked for, which may include articles, podcast updates, hockey content, merchandise information, and promotions. We use a confirmation email to verify your subscription. We may collect statistics such as whether an email was opened or a link was clicked.
We follow Canada’s anti-spam legislation. We ask for your consent, identify ourselves in our messages, and include a working unsubscribe link in every marketing email. You can unsubscribe at any time using that link or by contacting us, and we will act on your request promptly and within the time the law allows. We keep a record of your consent for as long as the law requires. We will not sell or provide your email address to unrelated third parties for their own marketing.
When We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information for money. We share it only when reasonably necessary to operate 5 For Fighting and provide what you requested. This may include:
- fulfillment providers such as Printful, and shipping carriers;
- payment processors;
- our website hosting provider;
- our email and newsletter providers, including MailPoet;
- analytics and advertising providers, such as Google, through the cookies described above; and
- professional advisors, such as accountants and lawyers.
These providers receive only the information reasonably necessary for their service. We may also disclose information where required or permitted by law, such as to comply with a court order or lawful investigation, or as part of a sale or reorganization of our business, in which case we will require the new owner to respect this policy.
Storage and Transfers Outside Canada
Some of our service providers, including Google, Printful, our email providers, and our hosting provider, may store or process information in other countries, including the United States. Information held there may be subject to the laws of those countries, including access by their courts and authorities. If you have questions about our use of service providers outside Canada, contact our privacy contact listed above.
Protecting Your Information
We take reasonable measures appropriate to the sensitivity of the information we hold to protect it against unauthorized access, use, disclosure, loss, or theft. However, no website or method of electronic transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure. If a privacy breach occurs that triggers notification or reporting requirements under applicable law, we will take the steps required by law.
How Long We Keep Information
We keep personal information only as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill the purposes it was collected for, provide our services, resolve disputes, and meet legal requirements. For example, we keep order and financial records as required for accounting and tax purposes, which can be six years or longer. When information is no longer needed, we will take reasonable steps to securely delete or de-identify it.
Your Privacy Rights
Subject to applicable law and legal exceptions, you may:
- request access to the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete;
- withdraw your consent, as described above; and
- ask questions or raise concerns about how we handle your information.
To make a request, contact us using the details below. We may need to verify your identity first, and we will respond within the time required by applicable law. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.
Children’s Privacy
Our Services are not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will review the situation and take appropriate steps.
Third-Party Links and Embedded Content
Our site may link to or embed content from other websites and services, such as social media, video platforms, podcast players, and retailers. We are not responsible for their privacy practices, so please review their policies.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this policy as 5 For Fighting grows, our services change, or privacy requirements change. The updated version will be posted on this page with a new “Last updated” date.
